Pave Route 9. Saw this on a flashing highway sign on my commute this morning. I dig this idea a bit, since there have been many times over the years when I would wonder WTF various construction crews were doing, aside from messing up my commute. There is also something funny about the “under construction” text all over a site dedicated to providing information on a construction project. Like real world, like web I suppose.

Booth babes. A staple of online-ad trade shows, and of probably a lot of other trade shows for various industries. Some solid entries from last week’s ADTech show. The CPX girls were literally stopping traffic in the aisles at the show, so they have to win this.

In the interest of full disclosure, Kyle and I collaborate on several things together, one of which may involve my helping these guys create some more buzz and drive some more traffic to the site…so this post is part random and part calculated. Either way, enjoy the imagery on the site, but depending on where you work, lingerie models may be considered not work safe.

Since end-of-year top-ten lists are so de rigueur, I figured I would mail it in with an easy one, and spice it up with an eleventh item. Here are my top eleven favorite websites of 2006…no particular thread that ties them together, other than the fact that I read/visit/use/check them almost daily and would be sad if I couldn’t or didn’t.

Bloglines – This is where it all comes together. I know there are other RSS readers out there, but I am pretty deeply entrenched with Bloglines and have no real compelling reasons to leave. If you are NOT someone who users an RSS aggregator, I suggest you start right away. There is no better way to consume daily content on the web.

MySpace – I am sure that MySpace is teetering on the cusp of uncoolness, but it still is the undisputed king of the social web right now, and it is a daily part of my online life.

Google – How can this not make the list? What other site is more a part of every web user’s life than Google. I search easily 50 times per day on average.

Yelp – This is a new one for me in 2006. It is my go-to for all restaurant reviews, and is a well done, well laid out, easy to use, and fun community review site for almost anything you can think of, that involves eating and fun in your city.

Last.fm – I put on Last.fm each morning at 9, and run it until I leave each evening at 6.

PaidContent – Simple, straightforward, relevant to my professional life, and niche enough and broad enough at the same time.

Universal Hub – Universal hub is the best local news filter around. I can easily digest all of the things that are going on in and around Boston, not all of which will and do make the newspapers.

Gawker Network – Gawker just brings it. Deadspin, Valleywag, Fleshbot, Gawker proper. Always snarky, always well written.

WormtownNightlife.com – I recently parted ways with this site after creating it some 5+ years ago, but old habits die hard. I still pop in and see what’s going on every day.

Boston Police Blog – Some blogs are complete pointless wastes of time, and others actually serve a purpose and present relevant information in a meaningful way, that is typically hard to find or access. This is the latter.

Flickr – Why would anyone bother with any other photo sharing or photo organization sites?

And there ya have it. Beyond that top 11 list, some blogger friends who also deserve some props (in no particular order) are:

Amy
Pete
Linnea
Buck
John
Noah
Duncan
Sooz
Kareem
Eric
Jonathan

Happy 2007.

I have been using Del.icio.us more feverishly than usual lately, but have been bad about tagging things appropriately. Instead, I stamp almost everything with an “interesting” tag, and then go back to the list when I have a few minutes, and take a look at whatever it was I didn’t have time to digest in full the first time around. The whole list is here, but some highlights that have caught my attention over the past month or two are…

Recipe Matcher – A great idea for a site, and a good guy (he is doing some business with me via my 9-5. This is one of those sites that I hope people use, and as a result, sticks around for a bit. Perfect for the 20 something single crowd that lives off of the local takeout here in Brighton.

Requiem For A Rookie Card – As I read this, I felt like it was something I had written. I think nearly every guy my age, who collected cards, still associates Billy Ripken with “fuck face”. If you don’t get that reference, this article isn’t for you. If you smiled as soon as you read that line, check out the link.

Fudtz Sign Language – Still the funniest single page on the web in my opinion.

Fox 2.0 – Articles like this make me kind of wish I had stayed at FIM. Then again, I would have had to relocate to LA…either way, an interesting read.

Old School Companies New Again – This link has been all over the web recently, but worth a look if you haven’t seen it yet. Old school companies get a web 2.0 logo makeover.

Time’s Top 50 Coolest Sites – Pretty good list actually. However, given Time’s history, you may want to sell off any investment you have in these companies.

Things have been a little hectic lately to say the least, and I haven’t had a lot of time to post the usual drivel here on my site that I love to spew under normal circumstances. I am in the process of moving (within Boston) and just completed the first week at a new job, as I left Focalex last month after 5+ great years.

So anyways, below are some links that may or may not have sprung into more robust posts if I had the time. Enjoy.

This Is Broken – A great, and simple site. Probably something I would have done had I thought of it first.

What Design Should Cost – Having designed casually for a while now, and having lived with and been friends with many designers, the most common frustration amongst designers, is the lack of respect they get when it comes to being paid for their work. The importance of design is often fluffed off, as project managers see it as a needless extravagance that eats away at a budget, but personally, I think design is one of the most important parts of any project, and it costs money…so PM’s out there, start accounting for realistic design costs.

Boston Police Blog – Not sure how many variations on the post title “Double Shooting In Dorchester” that the writers will be able to come up with, but it sure will be interesting to watch and see.

Body Information – Some things you didn’t know about your body from Men’s Journal. I still won’t buy Men’s Journal, and I probably won’t ever do these things, but interesting nonetheless.

Ten Things I Hate About Commandments – Well done movie trailer parody. Worth the two minutes it takes to watch.

<a href="http://qwerky.stellify.net/>Web 2.0 Blogish Site – Sites monitoring and mocking web 2.0 seem to be more interesting and sustainable than Web 2.0 itself.

Prospectiv – “There are no jobs in this town. Unless you want to work FORTY HOURS A WEEK”. This is where I am spending my time these days.

TagWorld Widgets – These guys are quietly creeping up on MySpace, and although they have a way’s to go, this site is an indication that they “get it”. Instead of sending C&D letters to feeder sites creating widgets (a la Fox), TagWorld is actually encouraging users to create, share, and feed new widgets into the system. Pay attention MySpace, given the gargantuan lead you have in the space, you could rip off this idea and get your next 50 features from this sort of thing.

PunkyStyle – Speaking of people that “get it”, Amy has been quietly plugging away on a great little style blog of her own. She is always concerned that no one cares, and no one reads it, but I assure her that people do (they really do according to the webstats). Check it out, and if you like it, send her a note and let her know…she’d love it.
