After breaking my second expensive point and shoot camera in as many years, I have decided that it is time to do what I have been wanting to do for a while now, and move to a DSLR. Aside from being slightly more bummed when I smash this camera too, I am hoping that with this new purchase I can start to become a bit of a better photographer with some new, and slightly more sophisticated equipment.

Though my friend Duncan made a good point, saying something along the lines of “sometimes getting an SLR can make you take worse photos, due to the desire to tinker with settings you know nothing about” (I am paraphrasing), I am hoping to learn enough of the basics to actually make it a worthwhile purchase.

While I wait for the camera to arrive on Monday, I have been watching some great little tutorials over at DSLR Tips, which has some great information on how to use your DSLR camera effectively. As someone that is not one to sit with an instruction manual for hours, short instructional videos that show me how to get some of the more common desired effects, are right up my alley.

Check the tutorials out here, and hopefully if you are a hack DSLR user like me, you will find them valuable. I know I have so far.

Once I get some photos taken, and put my newfound knowledge to work, I’ll post some results and you can judge the results for yourself.

In case you hadn’t heard, Playboy unveils it’s Girls Of MySpace pictorial tomorrow, starting with a special sneak peak in the Cyber Club. Now Hugh Hefner went deep on this one. He spent months chasing down leads, and hitting dead ends. He scoured the bowels of MySpace, searching for the rare but beautiful species whorus internetus, that is sometimes found in the deepest and darkest corners of the vast the social networking site. He labored, and toiled, and never gave up on his dream of finding vibrant young women who were willing to disrobe for his cause. It wasn’t easy, and at times it looked bleak…but wouldn’t ya know it, they found some willing participants for the upcoming “Girls Of MySpace” issue, and now you get to enjoy the fruits of his labor, starting tomorrow.

Back before Jonathan took off on his whirlwind world tour, we were having a farewell dinner with a group of friends here in Boston. At some point during the dinner, we had a dispute over a few dollars. Nothing nasty, just a little push and pull over the details of a prior transaction. Somehow, though the details are a little hazy (probably due to the drinks consumed at that dinner), Jonathan ended up taking the $10 bill I had in my wallet and tearing it in half, telling me that when he returned, I could meet him in Vegas and collect a crisp new $10 bill. At first I was horrified, but then I had a thought. I was ok with the $10 being torn, and even the idea of turning it whole in Vegas, but I wanted Jonathan to take his half around the world and photograph it, Travelocity Gnome style, in front of lots of cool things all over the world.

Well, true to his word, he has done just that. My $10 bill has seen some pretty remote places in South America and Africa so far, and I am hoping, that it makes a stop in Antarctica before the year’s end…but who knows.

My half…well…my half has seen the second bedroom in my apartment.

On as related a note as I can imagine, there was a post some time back that Jonathan also made regarding his Flickr limit and an inability to purchase more bandwidth. Seems like Flickr, being such a cool company and the darling of the Web 2.0 crowd, would have been more accommodating. Guess not. More here.
