This little idea comes from two random thoughts/bits of information that collided last night randomly. While migrating some stuff from old laptop to new, I was thinking about how I haven’t really been fully bitten by the twitter bug (but I have tried) while simultaneously reading a snippet about how those who keep food diaries eat much healthier than those that don’t.

Being someone who has softened up a bit since college due to a dramatic decrease in physical activity (I played on the men’s soccer team in college and therefore worked out at least 2 hours per day, now I work out maybe an hour per week), and increase in appetite and access to tasty foods, it struck me that twitter might make for a great way to keep a food diary. Easy and quick posting, right at the time of consumption, right to a chronologically sorted storage area online.

I’m sure someone has done this before, but now so am I. You can follow my progress (thrilling I know), and mock my food intake, at http://twitter.com/whatamieating

Sometimes us web nerds forget that there is a whole other world of normal people out there. We think everyone uses Twitter, browses in FireFox, and wants an iPhone. The truth is, these are mainly just wildly popular things within our little nerd world.

Of some 850+ users that answered this poll earlier in the week, 93% don’t even know what twitter is.

This is one of the reasons I really enjoy Quibblo. We can throw polls up there on anything we want, and get some interesting quick data from our users. Now bear in mind that the users are heavily tween to teen, but it still is cause for pause the next time that you think “everyone uses twitter”.

Why doesn’t Facebook, or even Fox Interactive (MySpace) buy Twitter? As far as I know and can tell, Twitter makes no money today. Though there are rumblings of some different ways that they *could* monetize their services, nothing seems to have materialized just yet. So as of now…no revenue.

However, Twitter has a lot of passionate and addicted users.

And of course MySpace and Facebook are battling it out for users and for social network supremacy.

And lastly, both MySpace and Facebook have “status” features that are essentially little Twitters within their respective networks.

Am I missing something here, or is this just too logical an acquisition to make sense? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

In case you haven’t heard, Digg, the link submission site full of Kevin Rose’s self-important wannabe BFF’s is up for sale. As far as I can tell (and admittedly, I am a light digger at best), ad revenue is Digg’s main source of income…though the user base doesn’t seem like it would be the most welcoming to potential new owners, particularly new owners who would be hoping to leverage the right ads against Digg’s traffic base in order to see some ROI from their purchase.

When one digger recently posted a link to Business Week, discussing a possible sale, the first comment was fitting, and seemed to sum up how those in the ad business view the average Digg user. IE, anti-web-commercialism, and ironically uninformed (Google is the web’s largest ad company, no?).

But, it is the new bubble, so someone will no doubt scoop up Digg, along with it’s jack-ass user base, for some nine-figure sum, and we’ll all see what happens from there.

Good luck to whomever buys this one, you’re gonna need it.

I have been a firefox guy for several years now, and one of the reasons I remain loyal to the browser, is the extensions and add-ons. There are just so many things that I have snapped onto my browser that make my life a little easier. Of all the firefox extensions and add-ons I use, these are my top six, must have, best firefox extensions:

Gmail Manager – Gmail is the central unloading point for all incoming email to some of my dozen or so email addresses. This extension keeps a handy little inbox counter and icon down on the right bottom corner of my browser. It even displays little snippets of my messages, so I can see if it is anything worthwhile without logging into Gmail.

Google Preview – Google Preview is a nifty little extension that adds a small thumbnail screenshot to the left of your search results in Google. This is one of those extensions that you don’t think matters until you use it, and then you won’t ever want to use Google without it. Those little screenshots really allow you to scan search results more intelligently and more effectively, totally worth the install.

Search Status – Right from their description, “Display the Google PageRank, Alexa rank and Compete ranking anywhere in your browser, along with fast keyword density analyser, keyword/nofollow highlighting, backward/related links, Alexa info and more.”. For geeky web people like me that do a ton of media buying and other nerdy stuff, this is an awesome little extension.

FireBug – Firebug is something that I added recently, but use probably 10 times per day at least since bringing it into my extension family. This little plugin allows you to view all sorts of interesting information about the css/html/etc for any web page you are on. It’s like “view-source” on steroids and HGH at the same time. My favorite feature is being able to edit CSS live on any site as I am developing and messing around. Saves a TON of time.

FireShot – This one came via a friend of mine, and could be the coolest add-on I have installed yet, though I haven’t had to use it in a real situation yet. Fireshot is a super awesome screen grab and annotation tool. Download and try, it is awesome.

Any other good ones out there I should try (aside from Greasemonkey)?

My buddy Noah, who is always up to something interesting, just threw together two sites that are bound to cripple the productivity of nearly every female office worker that stumbles by them. Thanks to Noah, no longer do you need to scour all corners of the internet to get your fix when it comes to Sneezing or Snoozing puppies. He has gone ahead and taken the work out of the hunt, and given the world…you guessed it…SneezingPuppies.com and SnoozingPuppies.com. And to make it even easier, he has named the URLs in such a way that there is no confusion as to which is which.

Though it may seem otherwise, I am not mocking these sites. They will be a minor hit, I have no doubt. As I commented on his post, this sort of stuff freezes girls in their web tracks, they can’t consume enough of this content. Web porn for girls is videos and pictures of puppies, not of hunky dudes, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
