Ginger Infused Vodka

After some time spent looking around for off-the-shelf ginger vodka with which to re-create the Ginger Cosmo at Excelsior here in Boston, I gave up and decided that there was really only one way to get the central ingredient for this cocktail.

To make it myself.

Not only did I think it’d be kind of fun, and awfully easy…but it would certainly be gentler on the wallet than downing the real thing at the Excelsior bar. A bottle of Vodka is under twenty bucks, and ginger root is cheap, while the Ginger Cosmo runs $12 per drink.

And off we go.

The ingredients are assembled and ready to go. Once piece of fresh ginger root, one bottle of Level Vodka, a knife, and a cutting board. I also grabbed a small jar, as I needed to pour out some vodka to make room in the bottle for the ginger root (I wasn’t about to do 4 shots at 10am)…and since I had some spare vodka and some fresh blueberries, I thought I would double my vodka infusion pleasure with a mini-batch of blueberry vodka.

A handful of blueberries from Russo’s go into the jar, ready to meet their vodka soaked fate and infuse themselves into the booze.

Mushed up nicely, since popping the berries allows the blueberry-ness to mingle with the vodka. The gunk from the berries will be strained later when it is drinking time.

Add vodka, shake, and seal nice and tightly. This will sit in a nice dark spot for about a week, before it is strained (probably through a coffee filter) and mixed into a nice cocktail.

The ginger root is peeled and ready to be chopped up and added to the booze. Kind of a pain in the ass to peel given it’s shape and rough edge. As soon as you peel the ginger though, the smell is intense and pretty awesome.

I went with a pretty rough chop. No need to mince this stuff, but just enough to get it through the small opening of the bottle and to really release some of the ginger-ness. I read that 1/2 cup per 750ML is a good ratio, but since I removed some of the vodka from the bottle up front, this will end up a slight bit more concentrated. Fine by me though, I tend to err on the side of more flavor, rather than less.

In it goes. A little shake, and along with the blueberry batch, this heads into a nice dark spot to work it’s magic. A little shake every few days, and in about two-weeks, this should be ready to go. From there, it is Ginger Cosmo time.

In case you are wondering, the ingredients are…

* 1 1/3 cups Triple Sec
* 1 cup white cranberry juice
* 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
* 12 pieces candied ginger on bamboo picks, for garnish

I’ll report back in a couple of weeks with some details on how it all came out. Looking and smelling good so far though.

Manny Ramirez Sighting

I am not usually one to get overly starstruck when it comes to seeing professional athletes, but last night, when we plopped down at the Excelsior bar here in Boston, and noticed that Manny Ramirez was sitting next to us, I was pretty taken aback.

Manny

I have been a huge Red Sox fan since I was about 8 years old, and Manny Ramirez is far and away my favorite Sox player, and has been for years. So it was pretty odd to see Manny doing normal people things, like sitting in the bar, having a drink with his wife, watching baseball highlights on the bar TV.

And no, I didn’t say anything to him because…

  1. He didn’t look like he wanted to be bothered.
  2. He had struck out to end the game in a critical situation hours earlier.
  3. If for some reason he was less than polite to me, it would have ruined the Manny Ramirez aura for me, and I didn’t want to risk it.

Either way, it was pretty cool.

Louis CK – Shameless

When his HBO special “Shameless” came out, I quickly added Louis CK to my short list of favorite stand-up comedians (others are Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, and the late Mitch Hedberg). I never got into Lucky Louie when it was on, but ended up falling for Louis CK’s standup material face first. Not sure how I missed him for so long, given that he is a Boston guy, but I did. Anyways, I am glad I found him.

His delivery is brilliant, his jokes are hilarious, and his style is just perfect. He talks about regular guy stuff, and watching his act is a lot like sharing beers with your funniest friend. Definitely heavy on the profanity and the wife and kid routines, but somehow the way he delivers it all makes it genuinely funny, and not like some others who are shocking merely to be shocking.

The clip below is from that HBO special, and is just awesome from start to finish. Lots and lots of profanity, so if you are at work, or if there are kids around, this is a definite headphone situation, but it is worth it.

And this guy is not a one act pony so to speak, I saw Louis at the Comedy Connection in Boston this past spring, right on the heels of his HBO special, and he did all brand new material…and it was just as good as the old stuff. He is back here in Boston this November, and I have no plans to miss it.

Invitation Design And Graphic Design

I got an email from Gina today, asking me for some help moving around domains and what not. Seems as though she is shedding the ginagraphics persona, and taking up a new home at gindedom.com. Same services, just in a new digital place.

While doing a couple of quick tasks on the tech side, I took a whirl through her portfolio and was reminded of just how amazing her work is. Long story short, if you are in need of birth announcements, wedding invitations, layout work, logo and identity services, or anything of the sort, definitely put her at the top of your list. She works amazingly hard, has very reasonable prices, and puts out just fantastic quality stuff.
