I can also see the potential awesomeness of it too. You can set your checkin as "off the grid" though, where you want to get credit for the checkin, but not divulge location. From a business perspective, it is a very not-defensible model, that is for sure. Yelp, or Google could add this feature (checkins) and immediately start to devour the foursquare business pretty easily (http://www.techcrunch.com/2010/01/15/yelp-iphone-app-4-check-ins/) I can see how one might be wary of it.
