I love my neighborhood (Allston/Brighton) in large part because of the divey, cheapo, college vibe that permeates it. But it seems as of late, things are getting more and more frou-frou.
First, I see that the “379 Club” is opened up on Cambridge Street, which bills itself as “Metropolitan Grooming For The Metropolitan Man“. Gag.
Now I see that sites like GridSkipper and Daily Candy are pimping a new swanky swank sushi bar called Privus.
I was so excited to find out that the renovation next to the Kells was a swanky, tasteful martini/sushi bar, and not another crappy take-out place that Allston is saturated with. (more)
Though the latter of the two is something I will likely check out, I still feel a bit less than jazzed to see this stuff moving into a block that is best known (and best for) it’s eclectic mix of charmingly sketchy eateries and beer bars. I’d prefer Allston keep it’s Allston feel, and that the chic-Back-Bay joints stay over in the Back Bay, which isn’t that far away.
