How about no more receipts period, unless requested? Do I really need a receipt every time I purchase a magazine, cup of coffee, pack of cigarettes or whatever. And the way the sneak into your hand before your change so you are forced to take it. Think about the amount of paper, and energy that could be conserved by doing away with receipts all together. I was googling this concept when I came across your blog. I am seriously considering buying the domain nomorereceipts.com and calling people to action!

Consumers can “opt out” of receiving telephone books at www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org. They will contact the publishers and inform them to stop delivering books. This is a free service for consumers. www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org is working with state and local governments on ordinances concerning the delivery of unsolicited telephone books. www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org is not against the telephone books but against the delivery of 4 to 5 pounds of paper on people’s door step 5 to 6 times per year and being told it is our responsibility to recycle something we did not ask for. If we need a book we will call. Otherwise I “opt out” from receiving it.

I am soo angry about this phone book situation! My building has enough room for 6 business. At this time there are only 2. There are about 3 entrances into each part, two outside bathroom (guy/girl have seperate doors, and there are 3 staircases. Bags of 3..yes 3 phonebooks have been left at every door I mentioned above. Even at each guy and girl bathroom door! What? They are obviously marked with the bathroom sign and everything. Then it is more than obvious that the other offices are empty but they still left them at each entrance and at the doors to the staircases!! There are over 50 phone books laying around! Its an outrage.

[...] I called the phone books a giant waste (which I know I am not the first to do), and now it would appear that Boston.com has taken notice as well. They’re the original search engines, leftover from the days of rotary phones and answering machines. Once valued reference books kept in a certain drawer or cabinet for easy and frequent access, the massive telephone directories landing on doorsteps and in apartment foyers across the city in recent weeks seemed bound for more ignoble destinations. more stories like this [...]

Excellent comments - looks like you beat me to the punch on this one! It's nice to see others irritated by the same topic. What I find so interesting is that this is not a divisive issue with an equal number of people for and against....this is heavily stacked (to use a pun) against phone book stacks.

Personally, I'd love to see a class action lawsuit started, or something along that line. Effectively, aren't they littering and polluting our city?

Out of 100 apartments in my building not one single person picked up the new yellow book. Why do they keep printing it? Who uses a phone book instead of the web?

I just just cleaned my office the other day and trash about 29 phone books, because the send us one from every town that has our ad. My coworkers said we should save them, I told her to save Google in her bookmarks instead.

Odd. The ones here in the UK all have cash or cash with receipt options. Some also have "Fast Cash" which is just £50 with no receipt.
