Boston News Women Are Hot. Search Terms.

When I put together the “Hottest Boston News Women” post over at my geographically specific alter ego Irregahdless.com, I thought it would be good for a laugh or two and that it might even pick up some random search traffic. As it turns out…laughs? Not so much. Search traffic? Yes. Take a look at the most popular search terms from the past month.

So two things are abundantly clear here. One, news girl content is good organic search bait, and two…my average Irregahdless user has an affinity for both car crashes and new women. Now that I think about it, I guess we already new that Maria Stephanos in particular was good for traffic…

Designer Wanted

And this time, it isn’t for some nickel and dime blog overhaul, this is a real gig. Here is the skinny:

We are looking for a long term contract designer for two major projects that we are working on. Both projects have slightly different styles to them, but I am pretty confident that they can both be done by the same person with relative ease. The person or shop for the job should:

  • Be responsible, deadline driven, and available during normal (9-5 EST) work hours.
  • Be reasonably priced. We aren’t looking for charity work, but we aren’t looking to overspend either. The right person can expect a steady stream of work for at least 6-12 months and beyond, as well as a LOT of referrals (good designers are hard to come by).
  • Be ideally local to the Boston area, but not necessary.
  • Be comfortable and experienced designing for the web environment
  • Have an understanding of CSS and basic web technologies.
  • Have familiarity with designing for online advertising.

In terms of style, one of the projects is ongoing, and will involve designing 5-10 (or more, or less) category specific graphic packages to use in pre-templated mini-sites that we are building. The other project is closer to a “Web 2.0ish” corporate identity and look/feel package, which may include layout mock ups, color schemes/palettes, and logo/typography design. For this second project, the designer(s) would work closely with our technical team to implement the design elements properly.

I know this description is a bit vague, but hopefully it is a start. If you are interested in talking about this job, or have someone you can refer to me, please contact me here.

Things That Suck

This week in things that suck:

  1. WordPress 2.0 sucks. The WYSIWYG editor is terribly awfully horrendous, the image uploading system is craptastic, and I can’t really see any particular reason that I would stick with it. I am a big supporter of WordPress, but I think I am going back to 1.5.
  2. MSN Adcenter terms and conditions box sucks. Look at this. It is an actual screenshot of the terms and conditions box that you need to read when signing up. Honestly.
  3. BlogAds continues to suck. Their site STILL sucks, their interface sucks, the whole process of buying and/or selling ads sucks. And to top it off, I was going to finally give them another go (since earnings can make a sucky thing less sucky) and wouldn’t ya know it, still non-standard ad sizing. BLOGADS, LISTEN TO ME. MAKE 120×600 and 120×240 AD UNITS. 98.7% of the blogs I have seen out there utilize some sort of 2 or 3 column setup, where the side columns are used for navigation and ads, and most of them are suited for 120 pixel ad units. For god’s sake, get some god damn standard ad units that people will use. Seriously, I hate you guys.
