External Links On Newspaper Sites

I have had a draft saved here for months entitled “Why Don’t Newspapers Use External Links?” that for one reason or another, never made it to prime time. I guess that I just never really got around to fleshing out the thought, and like many other half-baked posts and ideas, it ended up rotting at the top of my little admin page here, begging to be published. ANYWAYS…former fellow FIMmer Kareem Mayan beat me to the punch and outlined things simply and nicely today on his site, referencing the Toronto Star’s use of external links to create a more complete user experience.

But nobody has the answer to how old and new forms of media fit together, which means that experimentation is key to understanding. And experimentation requires changing the status quo.

So right on, Toronto Star, for taking a great first step towards figuring out where you fit in the new media landscape!

More Kareem here.

Snowball A Friend!

Um, pardon me? No thanks, really.

Snowball A Friend!

AOL surely could have used a better phrase than “Snowball a friend”.
Here is the email.

Ok, One More Time

Though I am still suspicious that my theme or upgrade was to blame for my host’s server load issues, I have caved and made some MORE changes. I dumped the old new skin (which I didn’t love anyways), and went back to the old color scheme, and used a slimmer and sleeker model, complete with some of the WP 2.0 widgets.

If you are reading on a feed reader, pop over and let me know what ya think. And Hostgator…if the server load issues come back, PLEASE contact me before pulling things down so I can investigate.

Slight Change

Seems like there was some phantom server load issues on my host, that were supposedly being caused by this site…though it was unclear exactly what it was. Hostgator was kind enough though to take the site down and not really give anyone a chance to troubleshoot, nor did they find it necessary to help point me to where the load strain was originating.

That being said, I can only deduce that it has something to do with WP 2.0 and/or the skin, so we are going to rock it old school for now.

In the meanwhile, if anyone can glean anything from this (log.txt), as to what might be causing the issues, feel free to let me know in the comments. Hostgator basically took the site down, said that things were using a lot of resources, and sent me this and a prayer to “fix it”.
