You will need a serial number and a very compelling story. I trip or holiday works well. You can find serial numbers on ebay fairly easily. Thanks Andrew, I feel guilty but Nintendo has a bunch of these just sitting on a shelf over there over inflating the price so I don't feel sooo bad.

You will need to buy...
The infared bar
The powerbrick
RCA cables
A controller and a game.

There are bundles on ebay with the infared bar, powerbrick, and RCA cables on ebay for around $50. So for $212 plus $50 you have a core system with a one year warranty.

Worked for me yesterday.
I live in Australia and called overseas to have one shipped to my younger brother in Arizona.
Not only did I manage to get a Wii for him in time for xmas but I also had free shipping.

I just tried this today and I was not given the option to have a replacement sent to me. I told them it was new out of the box and that it wouldn't read his discs and also added that it sounded like it was rubbing too. They just emailed me a return label and said I would get it back repaired within about 10 days of them receiving it. I almost asked about the replacement program but chickened out thinking maybe too many people have tried this and they caught on. Or maybe they are out. Oh and they do ask for a serial number. Oh well.

I tried to get a nintendo wii at the store, and it was sold out. Can I really still get a nintendo wii like this, or have they wised-up?

[...] seems like these days everyone wants to get a nintendo Wii. The way they market the Wii, they make it seem like it’s not just kids but for adults, too. [...]

yes, it does work. i could never get the wii in the store all sold out. so i did call nintendo and did as andrew said, and today it came by ups(console only). i will order all the other parts from ebay. i will let nintendo charge my card the $200. i did price all the other parts and they only add up to about $30 from ebay so not a bad deal. all i know is my three kids will be happy on christmas 2007. thanks so much andrew for putting this info out for the little guy.

FYI, they are in fact sending out a refurbished Wii. I found out after they sent me my replacement. I got an apology from a Nintendo rep and was told I should have been told. I didn't believe him. They'll have to send a new one or they'll have to send me a refund for sending me a "used" item. I paid full price for a new one only 2 weeks ago.
