External Links On Newspaper Sites

I have had a draft saved here for months entitled “Why Don’t Newspapers Use External Links?” that for one reason or another, never made it to prime time. I guess that I just never really got around to fleshing out the thought, and like many other half-baked posts and ideas, it ended up rotting at the top of my little admin page here, begging to be published. ANYWAYS…former fellow FIMmer Kareem Mayan beat me to the punch and outlined things simply and nicely today on his site, referencing the Toronto Star’s use of external links to create a more complete user experience.

But nobody has the answer to how old and new forms of media fit together, which means that experimentation is key to understanding. And experimentation requires changing the status quo.

So right on, Toronto Star, for taking a great first step towards figuring out where you fit in the new media landscape!

More Kareem here.

The no-linking thing is so old-school . . . it always saddens me to see sites that open links in new windows as if I am not possibly smart enough to make it back to their site were I to click away . . .
