Things That Suck

This week in things that suck:

  1. WordPress 2.0 sucks. The WYSIWYG editor is terribly awfully horrendous, the image uploading system is craptastic, and I can’t really see any particular reason that I would stick with it. I am a big supporter of WordPress, but I think I am going back to 1.5.
  2. MSN Adcenter terms and conditions box sucks. Look at this. It is an actual screenshot of the terms and conditions box that you need to read when signing up. Honestly.
  3. BlogAds continues to suck. Their site STILL sucks, their interface sucks, the whole process of buying and/or selling ads sucks. And to top it off, I was going to finally give them another go (since earnings can make a sucky thing less sucky) and wouldn’t ya know it, still non-standard ad sizing. BLOGADS, LISTEN TO ME. MAKE 120×600 and 120×240 AD UNITS. 98.7% of the blogs I have seen out there utilize some sort of 2 or 3 column setup, where the side columns are used for navigation and ads, and most of them are suited for 120 pixel ad units. For god’s sake, get some god damn standard ad units that people will use. Seriously, I hate you guys.

I agree with you completely on BlogAds. As soon as they did their overall with the Ajaxy scroll box for ordering ads I was floored at how unusable it was. You can look at 4-5 ads at a time and if you have to scroll within a goddamn frame to see more for no reason. All it does is constrain a potential advertiser from seeing a full menu of offering and makes navigation difficult. And this is on Firefox. Using it on IE, good luck, the scrollbar is some flaky it jumps out of control.

Everything about the site is archaic and hard to find.

And as a publisher I have noticed that they seem to be selling less and less ads. Our site and sites I frequent who use BlogAds, seem to have half as many ads as they used to.

If I were a professional advertiser, I think the sheer poor usability of BlogAds would be a big deterrent for me.

As a whole, I don’t think BlogAds gets its and it’s particularly frustrating because they could make it into something great. I wish I owned it.
