Facebook Open Registration

Facebook has just opened up registration to us non-college types. Head on over and ruin the party.

For what it’s worth, I personally think this is a stupid move that will do nothing more than piss off facebook’s already pissy base. The fact that facebook has been closed off to college kids only (unlike MySpace which allows in any freak, pedophile, pervert, and teenie-bopper in) seems to be the main appeal of the site for those that frequent its previously exclusive confines. Facebook has little chance to catching MySpace in terms of sheer numbers and cultural relevance, so why enter into that battle? Why not kick back and rule their (not so little) corner of this market? Why take away the one differentiator that makes facebook attractive to it’s users? The only thing that I can think of that would be similar, is if MySpace decided that it was going to take away profile customization, in an effort to make the site more appealing for a design conscious crowd….

Anyways, time to crash the party, drink their beer and flirt with their girlfriends. See you in there…O’DOYLE RULES!

    I find this to be a silly move on Facebook’s behalf too. Especially in regards to revenue. By having an audience that is nothing but mysoginists,alcoholics and Dane Cook fans, the advertising scope was limited, but could allow for a great amount of saturation on behalf of the companies and people behind this flood of bad culture. Now every Dick and Jane can have a profile, and the people behind collegehumor.com, and the ‘bros’ responsible for the text ads for Frat parties will have to find some other lame forum to get their message out.

    Also, with their rumored buyout by Yahoo of Facebook, I fear that Flickr might become a wasteland of party pictures (more so than it kinda is already).
