I am a pretty avid sports fan and I like to think I know a thing or two about most professional and college sports, including men’s college basketball. Each year I enter a few NCAA pools and occasionally I pull in a few bucks, but more often than not I am beat out by a few others who are a slight bit luckier than I am. Not more knowledgeable. Luckier. I say this, because each year, one or more of those people that finish above me are female and know nothing whatsoever about college basketball. They either pick by uniform color, or rank, or mascot, or because their friend or boyfriend went there, and they always beat me.
This year I will be trying a little experiment. I am going to enter three brackets into ESPN’s Tournament Challenge. One will be my normal picks, one will be picked according to rank (where ranks are tied, I will use today’s current top 25 rankings as a tiebreaker), and one will be picked alphabetically by college name. Once and for all we will see just how much of this NCAA Bracketology business is real science and how much is plain dumb luck.
