I am not sure who said it, but I once heard the Academy Awards referred to as the “Gay Superbowl”. I have to say, that is the most dead on, two word summation I have ever heard for this event…or any other for that matter. The hype, the betting on who will win, the pre-game shows, it really does feel like the Superbowl. For women and homosexuals.

I personally have not watched the Oscars…oh…let’s see…I think…ever. But tonight is different. Tonight I am going to check them out and finally see what all the fuss is about. Not so much the fuss over the awards themselves, but the fuss over the host, Chris Rock. There has been a fair bit of press this past week concerning the controversy over Rock being the host and wether or not he will make some horrible, off-color remark while hosting this most sacred of entertainment events. Why there is suddenly controversy now, I am not sure. Apparently the committee that chooses the host didn’t realize that Rock is not exactly Billy Crystal until a week before the show was scheduled to go on. Have they never seen Bring The Pain? or Bigger and Blacker? When they show these specials on Comedy Central, they have to beep the beeps it is so raunchy. But he kills. And he is funny and real and everything that the Academy Awards isn’t, and this is why I will tune in tonight and finally watch the “Gay Superbowl”.
